The Gory Gobbler: CNY Red Hots vs Oneonta Derailing Darlings Friday Nov 18th

Are you having derby withdrawals? Missing your favorite Central New York Roller Derby girls now that we are in the off-season? Then come to Oneonta on Friday, November 18th to watch the CNY Red Hots take on the Oneonta Derailing Darlings. The CNYRD Red Hots is a pick-up team of some of your favorite veterans from last season, transfers from other leagues, and many newbies fresh out of boot camp! This is your chance to watch up-and-coming players like Quicksey Trixie, Stella Overdrive, Kompact Risk, Major DisChord, Toe Tagger Body Bagger, Kell’s Fury, and Connie Vict make their CNYRD league debut!
This promises to be a fun bout. The Oneonta Derailing Darlings are a newer league, formed in 2010, and this is their home bout debut. You really don’t know what to expect with so many new skaters on both teams. Will there be more falls? More fouls? Will the teams be evenly matched? Who will be the star jammers? It’s anyone’s guess, and that’s why it’s worth the drive!
The bout will take place on Friday, November 18th at the Oneonta Derailing Darlings’ home at Interskate 88 (5185 State Highway 23, Oneonta, NY 13820). Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the bout begins at 7:15 pm. Tickets for children 12 and under are $3, and tickets for adults are $10. Bring in 2 canned goods for $1 off admission and the warm feeling that comes with knowing your donations will benefit the Family Service Association’s food baskets. Your ticket includes automatic entry into a door prize raffle, admittance to the open skate session after the bout, and drink specials at the after party. The after party will be at My Father’s Place (5690 Route 7, Oneonta, NY 13820).

Recruitment Night!! Wed Oct 26th, 7:30pm

It's that time of year again... Central New York Roller Derby is recruiting! This event is for new and potential recruits to come see what roller derby is all about - watch some demos, buy some merch, and meet some amazing people. Come one, come all! Sign a waiver, rent skates and necessary gear for $5 and skate with us, or just spectate for now, but we promise that won't last long ;)

Guys - you're in luck! The Quadfathers are also looking for new skaters to join their ranks - roller derby is not just for the ladies! Don't be scared, our shorts are much shorter than theirs... usually.

We are also recruiting referees, men and women! If you think you'd look great in stripes, or maybe you love to boss people around, become a ref!

The next newbie class starts the following Wednesday 11/2 from 7-10pm, so don't miss out on this chance to get acquainted beforehand! Don't wait - we won't hold another recruitment night until next fall. Come strap on some skates and be your own hero!

Classes run for 12-16 weeks on Wednesday nights from 7-10pm and Saturday mornings from from 10a-12p. Fees are $30 per month during the training. We have a wide selection of rental gear available for a small fee, but they are first-come first-served.

New Practice Space!

CNY Roller Derby is excited to announce that after a long search and nail-biting wait, we have the practice space of our dreams right in Utica!
At least until April 2012 (and we hope for the foreseeable future!) our home base will be the SportsPlex building at 496 French Rd in Utica. The building sports a 165' X 65' Mateflex synthetic sports floor, and is nice and clean and accessible for our skaters.

Tough Cookie Bake Sale, Saturday October 8th

On Saturday October 8th, CNY Roller Derby will host its 3rd semi-annual Tough Cookie Bake Sale. We have SOOOO many talented bakers/cooks/etc on the league that this event has become a food lover's delight!

The bake sale will take place at The Other Side, 2011 Genessee St, Utica (next door to Cafe Domenico), and will start at 11am. We'll stay open until the food's nearly gone, so come on down and get some goodies!

Prices range very inexpensive - from multiple items for $1 to the more 'gourmet' items that are $1-2 each. Come fill up a big tray for your office or just grab a snack on your way out and about.

There are usually multiple vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and other specialty offerings. Items will be clearly marked for dietary restrictions.

The bake sale benefits CNYRD as we go into our off season to help afford practice space and fees until April. Your support is highly appreciated and it all goes to help the league keep skating (plus you get yummy stuff to boot!)

Also, please support our loyal sponsors, Cafe Domenico (right next door- coffee, drinks, that cold glass of milk to go with all the cookies you're going to eat....), the Green Onion Pub (right across the street, full service bar with great atmosphere), and The Uptown Theater (also right across the street- great prices on new movies).

We will also have league merchandise, such as t-shirts, stickers, keyrings, and lots of other league stuff for sale. We will also have the Tough Cookie Cookbooks for sale showing many of the recipes from past bake sales.

There will be recruitment information available for all those looking to get into roller derby. We have a class starting THIS MONTH, so please feel free to come meet some of our members and talk about your plans to start skating!!

So come for the bake sale, load up on goodies, sign up for our new skater class, buy a t-shirt, grab a coffee to prevent the food coma, see a matinee, and have a drink at the bar to round off the afternoon. All within 20 yds or each other. Cant wait to see you there!

2011 marked the introduction of home team play where CNY skaters played against each other as members of the Blue Collar Betties, Rome Wreckers and Utica Clubbers. The Utica Clubbers finished as the 2011 CNYRD home team champions. Who will win in 2012? 2011 also marked the first full season as a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and the newly named travel team, the CNY All Stars, competing in sanctioned play. The CNY All Stars finished the season with an 8-1 record overall and 3-1 in WFTDA sanctioned play. Watch in 2012 as the CNY All Stars continue their quest to qualify for the East Region Playoffs.

8/13/2011 Bout Recap vs. Green Mountain Grade A Fancy

The much anticipated rematch of the Green Mountain Derby Dames and CNY Roller Derby took place on August 13th at the JFK arena in Rome. Previously, the travel teams of these two leagues had faced off once before in early 2010 with Green Mountain clearly dominating the game. Since then both leagues were accepted into the WFTDA and the CNY All-Stars were formed as CNYRD's new travel team featuring a very different line up from the last time these teams played. Two fresh faces were on the All Star bench making their travel team debut: Summer of Sam #18 and Mighty Mite #93 who both played their hearts out.

The bout started off with the usual excited tension as Star Face worked the crowd and pumped them up for derby action. All Star jammers for the evening were PiedViper #333, Spin Spin Sugar #230, GutShot #5685, Slay West #13, Mean Squeak #27, and Moody Obsession #5150. Jammers for the Fancy that evening were Terminather #1984, Nancy Nightmare #S810, Sonic Euthanizer #2015 and Scarlet Menace #d00m .Starting on the jammer line was Spin Spin Sugar for the All Stars and Nancy Nightmare for the Fancy. By the 7th jam the score was 7 All Stars and 1 Fancy. High scoring jammers for the evening were Spin Spin Sugar for All Stars with 34 points and Nancy Nightmare for the Fancy with 24 points. This scoring margin was gaped by half time with All Stars at 62 and Fancy at 29 leaving a painfully large hole for the Fancy to fill on the score board.

The All Stars were consistent throughout the game with solid walls followed by strong hits. Notably aggressive blockers Moody Obsession #5150 and Mia Malicious #16 did a great job pinning the jammers down and making hard hits. In the final jam, already in overtime, Mia Malicious and the Fancy jammer Sonic Euthanizer simultaneously were called for penalties. Sonic Euthanizer also suffered an injury which she could not immediately recover from, thus rendering the jam dead. Mia Malicious was then ejected after having accrued seven major penalties and Deadtime Story took her place in the box. One more jam continued after this with 4 seconds left on the clock because the previous jam was called for injury. Pied Viper of the CNY AllStars was sent out for one last time to start on a power jam and finished with a 8 point jam. Final score was 160 CNY to 75 GMDD.

The evening was summed up with the selections of MVPs for each team. Muffin for the Grade A Fancy and Slay West for the CNY All Stars earned their MVP awards through excellent skills, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm that evening. Slay West then received a little surprise as Mean Squeak purposed and asked her to be her Derby wife. Yays!

CNYRoller Derby would like to send out a huge thank to all of our Volunteers, NSOs, announcers, and refs that traveled distances to provide us with a fun, safe and fair game.

CNY All-Stars Car Wash and Bottle/Can Drive 8/21!!!

On Sunday August 21st from 11am-3pm, members of the CNY All-Stars travel team, along with support staff, will be holding a fundraising car wash at Franklyn's Field on Black River Blvd in Rome. (see map at bottom)

The last 3 games of the All-Stars season are away games, in Philadelphia 8/27, in Long Island for the Empire Skate Showdown 9/3, and in Mass vs Pioneer Valley 9/17. We are raising money to directly defray the costs of travel for our players and support staff. Our skaters put their heart and soul into this sport, paying out of their own pockets to get to games and afford gas and food and hotel rooms. Please help us to lessen the burden on them so that they can represent the league and the CNY region the best possible- putting CNY on the map for roller derby excellence!

The cost is $5 per car. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any CNY All-Stars skater, or at our 8/13 home double header. You can also RSVP to the facebook event HERE.

7/30/2011 Bout Recaps: Home Team Championship and Quadfathers vs Capital District

Championship is a word synonymous with traditional athletic competition. On July 30^th CNY Roller Derby held its first ever home team Championship bout. This bout was the climax to the CNY home team season and it was anything but traditional. It was the third time the Utica Clubbers and the Blue Collar Betties faced off at the JFK arena in Rome, the Betties previously emerging with two victories against the Clubbers.

The game started with nail-biting intensity that carried on through the entire bout, which was clearly represented in a difference of seven points and a final score of the Utica Clubbers 109, the Blue Collar Betties 102. The Betties were held to a score of 0 until the 6th jam. By the 11^th jam the score was 27-22 in favor of the Clubbers, so it was still anybody's game. Jammers for the evening all held strong and each put up a good fight. Utica Clubbers' jammers for the night were Pippi Hardknocking #2, Mean Squeak #27, Moody Obsession #5150, Itty Bitty Bastard #410, Bloody Kisses #1313 and Short E. Fuze #412. The Blue Collar Betties maintained a rotation of jammers with Slay West #13, Pied Viper #333, Deadtime Story #19, Ganja Ninja #420, and Amanta Kill #658. High scoring jammers for the evening killed it. Mean Squeak of the Utica Clubbers was the leading scorer of the night with 39, including an 18 point jam. The Betties leading scorers were Deadtime Story and Slay West with 35 points each. The Clubbers used high scoring jams to control the lead. In addition to Mean Squeak's 18, Pippi Hardknocking had a 17 point and Itty Bitty had a 15 point jam. The Betties didn't give up however and worked hard to make a comeback at the end of the game. They outscored the Clubbers 28-4 in the last eight jams, holding them scoreless for the last six.

Blocking throughout the entire bout was consistent as both teams did a great job building walls and knock’n em down. MVPs for the evening were Mean Squeak of the Utica Clubbers and Ganja Ninja of the Blue Collar Betties. On the opposite side of the spectrum the Sin Bin Queens for the night were Itty Bitty Bastard of the Utica Clubbers with 7 trips to the box resulting in her ejection in the very last jam. Pied Viper of the Blue Collar Betties had 5 trips to the box.

All in all it was a tremendously fun bout and a great show of CNY Roller Derby’s competitive athletic spirit. CNY Roller Derby would also like to extend a huge thank you to all the people that make our roller derby bouts possible. To our refs, announcers, volunteers, NSOs, DJs, medical staff and fans - THANK YOU!

The Quadfathers are back and hitting harder than ever! At this past weekend’s co-ed double header, the Quadfathers dominated against Albany’s mens roller derby team, Capital District Trauma Authority. Eager to avenge their loss from their last bout against CDTA in April, the Quadfathers enthusiastically blocked, checked, and scored their way to victory, with a final score of 121-62. The Quadfathers’ jammers for the evening included Peach #27, Wildstyle #215, Die-Lon #315, Ball Zach #29, Grambo #37, and Bobby Brady #8. Jamming for Capital District Trauma Authority were Jonny Malice #11, Roarshock #8i8, and Up End Atom #9090.

The bout started with Up End Atom on the jam line for CDTA and Die-Lon for the Quadfathers. Although Die-Lon broke through the pack quickly and was called lead jammer, by the 4^th jam, CDTA was in the lead 2-11. Due to outstanding blocking from both teams, the score hadn’t changed much by the 7^th jam, and was 3-11 with CDTA still in the lead. However, the Quadfathers slowly pulled ahead and after 10 minutes of game play, the Quadfathers obtained their first lead at 16-11. The Quadfathers maintained their lead throughout most of the first half, but the teams were tied at 2 minutes left in the half at 44-44. Capital District Trauma Authority quickly pulled into the lead, and at halftime the score was 44-49, leaving fans to bite their nails as the Clubbers and Betties warmed up.

The 2^nd half began with renewed vigor and each team was clearly determined to win, but the Quadfathers quickly pulled ahead again, scoring points jam after jam until the score was 97-57 with 12 minutes left. Fans and skaters alike prayed for the best when Johnny Rebel took a spill and was assisted by EMTs off the track 5 minutes later with a makeshift cardboard splint on his leg. After another 7 minutes of game play, the Quadfathers had secured an almost-certain win at 106-62, barring the possibility of a power-jam or two. And triumph they did, with a final score of Quadfathers 121, Capital District Trauma Authority 62. Well-deserved MVP trophies went to Up End Atom of CDTA and Bobby Brady of the Quadfathers.

As always we owe everything to our fantastic refs, who keep our bouts safe and fair – huge thanks to Lizy Longshanks, The Constable, Otto A-Linement, Anne Persand, Reffin Aint Easy, Magnum Joe. and Miranda Wrights. Special thanks to our wonderful announcers, Eloda Sarcasm and Ida Feltersnatch, who keep us entertained and informed so very well. Thank you to all of our lovely NSOs and other volunteers, who donate their valuable time to help run things as smoothly as possible, and of course all of our amazing fans! Wed August 10th: CNY All-Stars invade Nail Creek Pub

Please join us on Wed. August 10th at about 9:30pm at the Nail Creek Pub & Brewery on Varick St in Utica to celebrate an awesome 2011 home season and to see us present Nail Creek's official CNY All-Stars team jersey to the bar. Members of the CNY All-Stars and others from the league will be in attendance to promote Aug. 13th's double header bout, and even to hand out some free tickets (there's a certain challenge that's been going around concerning having your pic taken in gold booty shorts for free tickets....ask Little Bastard that night for details....) We are also celebrating yet another wonderful class of new recruits who have been training hard since April to become members of the league, and are getting ready to graduate and compete.

Nail Creek sponsored this year's fancy new CNY All-Stars uniforms, and so now its time to show them some derby love! .....and to have a few drinks before we have to 'be good' and start hydrating before the bout.

Sat Aug 13th: Final 2011 Home Season Bout- NY vs VT double header!!!

Saturday August 13th will be CNY Roller Derby's final home bout of the season!
If you liked our July 30th men's and women's double header, then you should definitely check this one out too. We are lucky enough to be hosting a full on New York vs Vermont battle royale with this bout, pitting the Central New York region against the Burlington, VT region.

The first bout will kick off at 5:30pm with The Quadfathers playing the Burlington Bomb Quads in heavy hitting men's roller derby action. The Quadfathers are coming off a win against the Capital District Trauma Authority , and also recent acceptance into the Men's Roller Derby Association, and are looking to keep their roll going. The Quadfathers and the Bomb Quads last met in Burlington in March for a closed door bout in which the Quadfathers won 156-64.

At or around 7:30pm The CNY All Stars will be competing against the Green Mountain Derby Dames' Grade A Fancy who hail from Burlington, VT in a WFTDA sanctioned game. The CNY All Stars have had a great season so far with a record of 4-1. This game caps off a great inaugural season for the All-Stars travel team. According to Flat Track Stats, CNY is ranked #16 in the East region and Green Mountain is #23 currently. Dont let this stat fool you that this game is expected to be easy- When CNY and Green Mountain last met on March 13th 2010 in Essex Junction VT, Green Mountain dominated 102-43 against our then-travel-team the Utica Clubbers. CNY has come a long way since then however, and with a formal travel team, a ton of new talent, new coaching and a very different roster, this will not likely be a repeat of a near blowout.
Green Mountain is one of the newer WFTDA leagues accepted at the same time as CNYRD (late 2010), and has a very similar history, timeline, and size to CNYRD. This represents a very good match up in terms of league's available talent pool, region size, and ability. We are very excited to finally return the favor of hosting these ladies as we loved meeting and playing them last year.

We might even be lucky enough to witness a mascot vs mascot crowd riling extravaganza as Green Mountain's Gang Green tries to outdo hometown hero and CNY All-Stars mascot Starface! There's going to be entirely too much green involved one way or another:)

Announcing the men's bout will be Harry Crumb and Rebel Without A Pulse, and announcing the women's bout will be Rebel with Blackjack.
DJ'ing both bouts will be DJ Deaf Goeff, aka Funk Roll Brother.

Saturday July 30th: CNY Home Team Championships PLUS Quadfathers vs Capital District MEN'S DERBY!!!!

On Saturday July 30th, CNYRD is proud to present our first co-ed double header of the 2011 season. You get double the exciting derby for the same normal ticket price.
Doors at JFK Arena in Rome NY will open at 4:30pm. Beat the crowd and get there early. The first 200 fans through the door gets bout programs and once they're gone, they're gone!
The first bout of the season pits The Quadfathers Men's Roller Derby, our brother league, against Capital District Men's Roller Derby's 'Trauma Authority'. Back on April 2nd the Trauma Authority pulled off an upset win over the Quadfathers to a great crowd at the Washington Ave Armory in Albany. The Quadfathers were favored going into the bout having more experience, but penalties and great teamwork by the newer Trauma Authority led them to an unexpected 110-77 win. The Quadfathers were recently accepted as the 13th member league of the Men's Roller Derby Association, the official governing body for men's derby. This was a major step for the Quadfathers and we are so proud of them for being recognized as a solid organization in this sport where so many leagues and teams pop up and disappear so often.
Our hometown boys in orange are looking to take back ownership of the I-90 corridor with this bout. If you have never seen a men's roller derby bout in person, especially a rematch where pride is on the line, then you NEED to see this. If you've ever thought the hits in roller derby weren't big enough to entertain you, or hard enough to really hurt, then you havent watched these guys play. So come out early and help us cheer on the boys. They will have recruitment infomation available and new merchandise to sell (there's rumors of girls' cut 'Think Outside The Box' shirts!)
At or around 7:30, CNYRD again takes the track to bring you the 2011 Home Team Championship Game!!!!! In our first season of intra-league play, The Utica Clubbers, The Rome Wreckers, and The Blue Collar Betties have played their butts off to awesome crowds of loyal fans. The bout on July 2nd between the Rome Wreckers and Utica Clubbers decided who would play against the Blue Collar Betties for the championship. The Utica Clubbers came out on top and we are set up for a very hard fought battle to win the season title.
Captained by Lady Die Mentia #3, and bench coached by Sinful Pleasures (who played most of the season but was sidelined by a broken ankle recently), The Utica Clubbers stand 3-2 for the season so far. Noteable Clubbers' stats for the season include rookie standout Itty Bitty Bastard #410 leading the entire league with the highest points per jam average at 5.05; also of note is veteran skater Mean Squeak #27, who has outscored opposing jammers by 73 points this season.
Captained by Slay West #13 and bench coached by TOM-A-HAWK #1225 of The Quadfathers, The Blue Collar Betties have been the stand out success story of the season- originally having lost a number of skaters to injury and various leaves of absence, there was worry that the roster would be short. But with the addition of a few newer skaters, they have dominated the season so far with a record of 4-1. Noteable Betties stats for the season include veteran Pied Viper #333 as the leading scorer in the league with a 200 point total for the season and also having outscored opposing jammers by 74 points overall going into the championship game.
When these two teams first met on April 30th, the Betties had a clean win with a 118-92 score. In the space of the month of May, the Clubbers picked up their game considerably, and when these two teams met for the second time on May 31st, the Betties narrowly squeaked by a 1 point win 92-91, which came down to the last jam.
Its anyone's guess how this championship will turn out, but what we do know is this is going to be a very evenly matched and very competitive game!

You may have seen our friend Kitty Glitter at CNY Roller Derby bouts and other events- She's usually surrounded by young children that are totally enthralled with whatever games she has to play. July 9th was Kitty's last bout before leaving town for the rest of our home season, and from all of us at CNYRD, we wanted to say a special thanks for all the support and enthusiasm she brings to our events.

On that note, please go 'like' her facebook page, and think of her for family friendly entertainment at your next party or event.

We'll see you in the Spring again, Kitty!

The CNY All Stars are back on the track and they hit the ground skating against Ontario’s Rideau Valley Vixens.
On July 9th CNY Roller Derby hosted its first international bout ever while simultaneously premiering its third quarter All-Star roster. It was a truly phenomenal game as skaters saturated the air with competitiveness and calculated strategy with a final score of CNY 195 Rideau 117.

A neck and neck start to the evening’s events left spectators on the edge of their seats and by the third jam with a score of CNY 3 Rideau 6 it was anybodies game. CNY’s jammers for the evening Gutshot #56-89, Mean Squeak #27, Pied Viper #333, Slay West #13, and Spin Spin Sugar #230 obtained lead jammer status time and time again to widen the scoring margin. An especially outstanding performance on the part of Rideau jammer Soul Rekker #55 with total 45 points for the evening and CNY’s Spin Spin Sugar #230 whom accrued a whopping 95 points! Their efforts did not go unnoticed as they were both awarded MVP for the evening.

Throughout the night blocking intensified with some spectacular hits and consistent defense. Some familiar faces in CNY’s line up had fantastic enthusiasm: Curry Plowdher #117, Anita Grenade #79, Mia Malicious #16, Hot Cakes #42 and Moody Obsession #5150 were all crushing the Canadian visitors. By the 11th jam as the score was CNY 32 RVRG 28. CNY pulled ahead towards the end of the first half. By the half CNY was up 77 to 39.

A halftime show kept the night rolling with J. Charlz, Magician extraordinaire and his lovely All Star assistants Pippi Hardknocking #2 and Little Bastard #5.

The second half kept the intensity going as hits were harder, skaters were faster and penalties were given out like free popsicles on a hot day! Sin Bin Queens for the night were Moody Obsession #5150 and Pied Vipre #333 of CNY with 5 trips to the box each and Semi Precious, ASSASSINista and Soul Rekker of Rideau each with 6 trips to the box.

Sure enough the CNY All Star mascot STAR FACE was there to keep the crowd entertained by throwing out fishnets and Swedish Fish and his usual outrageous gesturing. CNY would like to send out a big thank you to all the volunteers that make our bouts possible and safe, to the medical staff, who were a great help (roller derby is rarely injury free,) DJ Deaf Geoff for keeping our night sounding sweet and to all Refs and NSOs for making our games safe and fair.

We would also like to send a special thanks to Ida Feltersnatch for teaming up with CNY's own Blackjack as our guest announcer for this bout, which was a milestone for her (her 50th bout announcing!). Not only did she announce Saturday night, but got up at the crack of dawn Sunday morning and ran the 5k Boilermaker!!! Thanks Ida!

Saturday July 9th: The Fishnet Frenzy

Join us this Saturday, July 9th as the CNY All-Stars take on the Rideau Valley Vixens of Ottawa, Ontario Canada at 7pm in 'The Fishnet Frenzy'!

This will mark CNY Roller Derby's first international competition. Rideau Valley is an apprentice league of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, well on their way to full membership. We are happy to host our sisters from the north, and this promises to be a very challenging game for both teams.
The CNY All-Stars have come out strong in the 2011 season with new members, new coaching, and as full WFTDA members. So far they are 5-1 this season, after a very close loss to higher ranked and more experienced Queen City Roller Girls on June 18th. The CNY All-Stars are currently ranked by Flat Track Stats as #16 in the Eastern region. The match up of these two teams will be a mystery until the bout starts, as the two have not shared the track with any of the same teams in their 2010 or 2011 seasons to use as comparison.

We will also have haltime entertainment by J Charlz Magic.
Our special guests for this event are the Utica LGBTQ Youth Group and facilitators, sponsored by Aids Community Resources.

Blue Collar Betties v. Jersey Shore Roller Girls’ 'Beat Downs'

Come out, July 2, for what may prove to be the most exciting double header of the season! Programs available for the first 200 people through the door so come early!

First up for the night will be the Rome Wreckers (1-2) versus the Utica Clubbers (1-2). The Rome Wreckers are coming off of an incredible win from their last intraleague bout versus the Blue Collar Betties, in which they pulled out a stunning 133-119 win. This win creates an exciting match-up for the July 2 bout. The Rome Wreckers will be playing the Utica Clubbers to decide who advances to the Championship Bout. Previously, the Utica Clubbers beat the Rome Wreckers in their first intraleague bout, but two months have elapsed since that first meeting and both teams have demonstrated impressive improvements.

The final bout of the evening will be the Blue Collar Betties (3-1 intraleague play) versus Jersey Shore Roller Girls’ ‘Beat Downs’. The Betties have consistently demonstrated a high level of play with only one loss this season. They are excited to break out of intraleague play for the night and take on a visiting team.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the first bout begins at 5:30 p.m. As always, ages 10& under and 65& over are FREE. On Sunday, June 26, CNYRD will host another exciting intraleague event. This will be the final intraleague bout for the Blue Collar Betties before they advance to the Championships on July 30th. The Blue Collar Betties have been enjoying an undefeated season with a 3-0 record. Though the Rome Wreckers have yet to secure a win, every bout they have competed in has been incredibly close this season. This bout will certainly be exciting as the last pairing of these two teams ended with a 1 point win for the Blue Collar Betties!

This bout will be a “Friends and Family” event. What this means is that we invite you, our friends and family, to come watch with a suggested donation at the door of $3.

There are no programs, no vendors, no halftime show, no fancy introductions etc......this is bare bones roller derby. We run it as a regulation bout in every way, and we take it very seriously, but it is not a full production event. We will have some league merchandise available for sale, and the arena will likely do light food and drink vending.

CNY All Stars v. Lake Effect Furies

CNY All Stars, now 5-0 after their most recent win against Assault City (Syracuse), look to take on the Lake Effect Furies of Buffalo, NY. The Lake Effect Furies may be the CNY All Stars most challenging competition yet this season. The Lake Effect Furies were recently ranked by WFTDA as the #17 team among East Coast roller derby. According to Flat Track Stats, CNYRD is ranked #17 and Queen City #14 in the Eastern region as of this week. The bout is sure to be exciting as the two very talented teams match up for this highly anticipated event.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the bout begins at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Rainbow Roller Rink at 101 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda, NY 14120. CNY Roller Derby has a long established rivalry with ACRD and we are excited to have another opportunity to compete against them this year. First up the CNY All Stars will take on ACRD’s Assault Squad. So far, the CNY All Stars are undefeated for the season with an impressive 4-0 record and an average 66 point winning margin. They are looking to keep their hot streak going after their most recent win against the Ithaca Suffer Jets.

Next CNYRD’s Rome Wreckers will compete against ACRD’s Battery Brigade. This will be the Rome Wreckers’ first ever interleague (outside of our own league) bout and they are looking forward to premiering their talents in Syracuse.

Doors open at 4:30 PM, with the CNY All Star v. Assault Squad bout to begin at 5:00 PM and the Rome Wreckers v. Battery Brigade bout to follow. Advance tickets are $10 for general admission ($12 at the door). Children ages 5-12 can sit in general admission for $5 (kids under 5 get in free). Fans 18 and over can purchase advance front line seats for $20 ($22 at the door). The front line seats sold out at the last bout, so make sure to buy them early.

On Tuesday May 31st, 2011, CNYRD will host the second in a series of intraleague bouts leading up to our season championship on July 30th. This bout will be a 'Friends and Family' event. What this means is that we invite you, our friends and family, to come watch with a suggested donation at the door of $3.

This is a great chance for you to see how the home teams stack up against each other for future games, and also a nice way to get to know your favorite players when there's not the craziness of a full bout to distract us.

This is the second match up between the Blue Collar Betties and the Utica Clubbers this season. On 4/30, these two teams played a public bout (The Icebreaker) which was the 2011 debut of the BCB's and saw the Clubbers coming off a win against the Rome Wreckers at the first friends and family event on 4/9. The BCB's won that bout 118-92, and are definitely looking to hold onto their winning record, while the Clubbers are clearly looking to avenge the loss.

Our New Floor.....

Any team or visiting skater that has skated with us at either of our seasonal practice spaces can tell you, our floors are far from great for roller derby. In recent winters, we have been on a traditional wood gym floor. As (bad) luck would have it, a very slick gym floor. In the summers, we are blessed to have JFK Arena in Rome which has a beautiful, flat, polished concrete floor. Depending on the weather, some days it is downright grippy, but the majority of the time its not.

The start of this season has been particularly slick, and we've tried everything under the sun to correct it. If there's a floor treatment, we've tried it, and with very small success. So far, the 'Traction' product sold by derby suppliers has worked best, but it's not enough.

So after saving, and members' hard work, and cutting costs, and putting our heads together with the lovely Randi Maehym, North America's (well, and a bunch of other places) rep for SkateCourt by IceCourt flooring systems, we've made a big move: Today we put the down payment on our own SkateCourt floor!!!!

We went small this time around, going with 6,468 sq ft, the bare minimum for a complete track and a 5' ref lane/crash zone. It's going to be quite the sight: A patchwork of 7 or so different colors done up derby style!

If you're not familiar with why exactly SkateCourt is the way to go for a derby floor (and trust us, it IS!), you should definitely check out their information here. Also, drop Randi a friend request on facebook using the link above for any questions you might have. The whole crew at SkateCourt has been SO amazingly helpful to us in this whole process, and we want to send a big derby THANK YOU to them.

This entire move is made possible by all of the amazing skaters, refs, NSO's volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and fans of CNYRD. All of those dues paid, those tickets sold, those long hours working merch tables at events, the sponsorships donated- this represents part of the sweet payoff! We will be given the opportunity to up our game in such a big way as a result of this purchase, increase safety for our skaters, and give our fans an all around better experience.

We LOVE what the Ithaca League of Women Rollers has done with their tile drive floor fundraiser , and we plan to do something similar here in CNY to help us with more flooring and to also showcase our loyal supporters beyond sponsors who are willing to give a few bucks to help us out and show their support.

Get ready for a double whammy of roller derby action! On Saturday, June 4^th Central New York Roller Derby will host a double header featuring all three of its home teams. Yes, that’s right you will get to see all your favorite CNY Roller Derby girls for the price of one ticket. It’s going to be derby-licious!

First up the Blue Collar Betties will take on the Rome Wreckers. This will be the second interleague bout of the season for both teams. The Blue Collar Betties are now 1 and 0 with an exciting win against the Utica Clubbers. The Rome Wreckers are still looking to secure a win for the season.

To round out the evening the Utica Clubbers will take on ManchVegas. ManchVegas hails from New Hampshire and will be the first out of league bout for the Utica Clubbers this season. So far, the Utica Clubbers are 1 and 1 with a big win against the Rome Wreckers and, most recently, a close loss to the Blue Collar Betties. The Utica Clubbers are hungry for another win and will be looking to take on ManchVegas with a vengeance.

5/14/2011 Bout Recap: CNY All-Stars vs Ithaca SufferJets

College graduations and high school proms didnt stop awesome derby from being had this weekend in Rome, NY. CNY Roller Derby hosted the Ithaca League of Women Rollers for the CNY All-Stars first home bout of the 2011 season versus the Ithaca SufferJets, titled "Blood, Sweat, and Fears".

The All-Stars came into the game undefeated for the season so far, coming off solid victories against Lehigh Valley and Long Island in recent weeks. Playing down veteran blockers Little Bastard #5 and Lady Die Mentia #3 due to injuries, and remembering the schooling Ithaca dealt to CNY in its first ever away game in 2008, the CNY roster and bench staff were taking no chances on playing this game smart and safe.

The All-Stars took the lead from the very beginning of this game and never gave it up. Jammers Spin Spin Sugar #230, Gutshot #5689, Pied Viper #333, Mean Squeak #27, and Sinful Pleasures #xxx0 repeatedly grabbed lead jammer status and did not fail to put up points. CNY's blockers played a very strategic game allowing lots of points to be scored and not many given up. Overall, CNY's jamming squad each had 20+ points in the game. In the first half, Pied Viper put up a 25-0 jam that allowed CNY to break away with a comfortable margin. However, Ithaca did not just lay down and take it. To the contrary, their blockers were dishing out big hits left and right, and quite a few times crowd members ended up with CNY players in their laps. The score at the halfwas 74-28 in favor of CNY.

The slow pack work, even at times resulting in clockwise packs, necessitated quite a few officials time outs as the refs sorted out direction of gameplay issues and made sure all calls were being reported in correctly. While so many zebra huddles make for anxious fans, both benches were thankful that the refs and NSO's took the time to make sure things were right.

The final score was CNY 180- Ithaca 68. High scorers were Spin Spin Sugar for CNY with 46 points, and for Ithaca AKT*47 with 17 points. Penalty queens this game were Cereal Suicide for CNY with 5 trips to the box and AKT*47 for Ithaca with 4 trips. MVP's were Moody Obsession #5150 for CNY and AKT*47 for Ithaca.

This bout also served as a bottle and can drive for the victims of the fire on Schuyler St in Utica last week which claimed 4 lives. We are happy to report that we collected a TON of cans and bottles for the cause. We'll have an accurate count sometime soon this week, but here's a quick picture of the 20ish garbage bags full that are awaiting pickup at the venue:

In other charity related news, this event also put another $115 into our donation fund for the Oneida-Lewis chapter of The Arc, our 2011 season non-profit partner.

This event marked a bitter sweet milestone for CNY Roller Derby: Doris Doomsday #818 skated her last bout with CNYRD. 'Doom', as she is known, is moving to Toronto, and we will all be very sad to see her (and Nic!) go. Doom served as the league's PR chair for the 2010 season and the league benefitted greatly from her guidance. We are sure that no matter where she is Doom will continue to be a name you hear about in flat track roller derby. All-Stars captain Gutshot had poignant words to share for Doom and Chairwoman Little Bastard presented her with flowers from the league.

Big thanks are due to our guest DJ, Gary Acey, for making the music happen on short notice, and helping us out big time! He not only loaned us extra speakers to make sure the folks at the ends of the stands could hear, but then loaded out super fast at teh end of the bout and was set up and ready for dance contests at the afterparty byt the time we got there!

Big thanks are also due to our very own Broadway Mu-Psycho for her awesome National Anthem, and to announcers BlackJack and Harry Crumb for holding it down all night. We couldnt do it without awesome volunteers!

Bottle Drive for Fire Victims this Saturday 5/14

Hello all.
Central New York is a big geographic area with a VERY small town feel. We all know each other in some way or another. So when tragedy strikes our area you can bet that at least one person involved with CNYRD has a personal connection.

On Monday one of the worst house fires in recent history claimed the lives of three young children and their mother on Schuyler St in Utica. The whole story is pretty awful. You can read info on it and see some video here.

Some of us know family and friends of this family, we know the news people who covered it, and we know the firefighters who fought it, and we want to do something to help out. There's a 10 yr old child who was at school when this occurred who is now without her mother and siblings.

We heard about this bottle and can drive, being started by Stash's Hit N' Run Redemption Center, and we thought about our bout this weekend and realized we might be able to make a considerable difference.

We would like to ask everyone planning to attend the bout to bring your cans and bottles for this cause. If you show up with at least one kitchen sized trash bag full, we will admit you at the pre-sale price of $8. But please, please, please; try to bring more than that. Load up your vehicle. We will have volunteers on hand who will be happy to help you bring it inside.

The folks at Stash's have agreed to come with a truck on Monday to pick up our haul. We would love it if it took two or three truckloads to cart it all away.

Thank you in advance for helping us make a difference in this terrible situation.

Nail Creek Pub: Our 2011 All-Stars Uniform Sponsor

We would like to give a HUGE thank-you and shout out to Chris and Tracy Talgo and the rest of the crew at Nail Creek Pub & Brewery for donating the money for CNYRD to have fancy new travel team uniforms made for 2011.

The uniforms, custom designed by CNYRD and produced by Cisco, have been commented on among the derby community as a noticeable step up in our travel team image. You can see the All-Stars in action back in March vs. Lehigh Valley wearing the uniforms in this really cool stop action video made by Pete Rodriguez, compiled from photos he took at the bout.

CNYRD could not be happier to count Nail Creek as a major sponsor. Beyond being a roller derby supporter from the earliest days of CNYRD, the Nail Creek has also been very supportive of other amateur sports teams in the area, and also community activism and outreach. Chris and Tracy took a dilapidated (and that's a serious understatement!) building in the brewery district on Varick St in Utica and slowly remodeled it into one of the most beautiful pubs around. CNYRD's start and slow build over the past 3 years to the league it is today has in many ways paralleled this process; re-birthing a nearly lost sport and bringing it back into the culture of CNY as an anchor sporting attraction.

CNYRD & Hot Topic Presents: PHYLACTIC! May 11th 6-9pm

On Wednesday May 11th from 6-9pm, CNY Roller Derby will team up with Hot Topic to bring you music from Phylactic, and promotion for the 5/14 bout vs Ithaca.

Phylactic is a duo consisting of JD Love (aka Pied Viper #333 of the Blue Collar Betties and CNY All-Stars) (vocals) and Justin Parker (guitar). They will be playing an acoustic set at Hot Topic while the ladies of CNYRD promote the bout. Next Home Bout: 5/14/2011 "Blood, Sweat, and Fears"; CNY All Stars vs Ithaca SufferJets

On Saturday May 14th 2011, CNYRD will host its first home bout of the 2011 season for the as-yet-undefeated CNY All-Stars travel team. The All-Stars will be playing the travel team from the Ithaca League of Women Rollers, the Ithaca SufferJets.

Ithaca was recently accepted into the WFTDA Apprentice Program, and we couldn't be happier to have more regional teams to play in WFTDA sanctioned play.

CNYRD and ILWR have a long history- In June 2008, ILWR hosted CNYRD's then-travel-team, the Asylum City Lunatics, in our first ever away bout (and kicked our butts all over the track like the rookies we were!) Since then CNYRD and ILWR have not seen much direct competition beyond scrimmages. Both leagues were looking forward to playing each other at last year's Empire Skate Showdown tourny, but the brackets did not permit it unfortunately.

Advance sale tickets can also be purchased at CNYRD's three normal locations; The Tram Cafe in Utica, Cafe Domenico in Utica, and Bill's Variety Store in Rome; for $8.00 until night of 5/13.

4/30/2011 Bout Recap: The Icebreaker

The Third Annual Ice Breaker held on April 30th 2011 at JFK Arena in Rome NY was a great way to kick off CNYRD's 2011 home season.

Approximately 400 fans packed the JFK Arena. 2011's Bout Production team put some new touches on the setup for the season, including a staged seating scheme with forward butt seating, folding chairs section, and stands seating which allowed every fan a decent view.. The Utica Clubbers and The Blue Collar Betties did not disappoint those fans. Those in attendance were treated to two action packed halves and a chilling half time!

While the friends and family bout held on 4/2/2011 counted for intra-league standings for the season, The Icebreaker was the first true, public home bout of the season, and featured two of CNYRD's new home teams. Fans may remember the names The Blue Collar Betties and The Utica Clubbers, but both teams have been re-tooled with new rosters chosen for 2011 and represented an entirely new challenge in competition. Being that the BCB's had the chance to see the Clubber in action against the thrid home team, The Rome Wreckers at the 4/2 event, the BCB's were truly the wildcard coming into The Icebreaker, and no one knew what to expect. Out of the three home teams, the BCB's had taken the most hits to their roster before the season got underway between skaters retiring, moving, or taking leaves of absence, so it was unclear what sort of force they would bring to the track.

From the BCB's, skaters Ganja Ninja #420, Newks #1337 and Amanta Kill #658 were playing in their first public full length bout, but it was not obvious by their playing ability. Saturday’s leading scorers were Pied Viper from the Betties with 38 points and E-Gore of the Clubbers with 21 points. Those ladies also held the bout record for the most points scored in one jam, 25 points for Pied Viper and 21 points for E-Gore. Both teams gave it their all while they battled back and forth for the lead, there were 4 lead changes in the second half alone. The final score was 118 to 92, in favor of The Blue Collar Betties.

Ultimately, penalty box trips by the Clubbers creating huge power jams were the turning point of this game. The Clubbers came off their recent victory against the Rome Wreckers having used strong pack control to their advantage against a faster jamming lineup, and the same strategy did not work as effectively against the BCB's all around solid play.

Several skaters couldn’t stay away from the sin bin (penalty box); Penalty Queens with 6 minutes each were Cereal Suicide #30 (BCB), Sinful Pleasures #XXX0 (UC), Frisky Whiskey #6od (UC) and Moody Obsession #5150 (UC). A very large amount of these were out of play penalties enforced when players were caught still blocking more than 20' from the defined pack.

CNY Roller Derby would like to give a shout out to everyone that helped to make The Ice Breaker a success, Kevin Curtis treated us to a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, DeafGeoff spun the tunes that kept the fans dancing in seats and the jammers jammin’ on the line. Kitty Glitter stole the show! Fans young and young at heart had fun with all the noise makers and pom poms she brought with her. Our announcers S-Dot and Black Jack did a great job keeping the fans informed.

This leaves the season standings at:

Also of note was the change in after party location for 2011- We all had a wonderful time at the Black River Ale House, which had plenty of room to handle our rowdy crowd. Super special thanks to Gary Acey for DJ'ing the afterparty and keeping it thumpin' until the last derby folks left. We really appreciated it!

On Saturday 4/30/2011, CNY Roller Derby celebrates the ice being taken off the floor at JFK Arena in Rome NY with our 2011 home season opener, THE (3rd annual) ICEBREAKER!!!! (link to facebook event page....let us know you're coming!)

This year's icebreaker will feature The Utica Clubbers vs The Blue Collar Betties. If April 9th's friends and family bout was any indication, these teams are ready to play HARD. The Utica Clubbers are coming off their win against the Rome Wreckers, and The Blue Collar Betties are making their 2011 debut with this game.

As always, advance sale tickets can be purchased for $8 from The Tramontane Cafe in Utica, Cafe Domenico in Utica, or Bill's Variety Store in Rome. Tickets can also be purchased online for this event HERE for $9.
The pre-sale price is good until the night of the 29th, then all tickets will be at the door price of $10. Also as always, adults 65+ and children 10 and under are FREE. Remember, if you buy a ticket at the door, $1 of your ticket money will be donated at the end of the 2011 season to The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, our 2011 season non-profit partner.

The event will feature lighting and video from Entertainment Services, music by DJ DeafGeoff, raffles, prizes, new 2011 league merchandise, concessions by the JFK Arena staff, and vendors.

4/9/2011 Bout Recap: Utica Clubbers vs Rome Wreckers intraleague

On Saturday 4/9/2011, CNYRD hosted its first ever official intra-league bout showcasing 2 of our 3 home teams established earlier this year: The Utica Clubbers and the Rome Wreckers.

We scheduled this as a 'soft start' to our home season, having only moved back into JFK Arena on Tuesday 4/5 and only having 1-2 times to skate on the concrete and get used to things before the bout. We advertised this as a 'Friends and Family' event, with a $3 suggested donation at the door, and we were overwhelmed to find approximately 130 people that came to watch and cheer on their favorite players.

Both teams sported new uniforms with new logo designs this season, the Wreckers logo courtesy of Rob Perry Design, and the Clubbers logo courtesy of our own Deadtime Story. Both teams had a solid mix of veteran and new skaters, many playing in their first full length bout, and also for many their first public bout. On the rosters were:

The game was far more hard hitting and physical than anyone expected, with a level of play akin to 2010's travel team bouts. The Clubbers used expert pack control to bring the pack to a near standstill forcing the Wreckers to frequently skate back to re-form quickly, and allowing their jammers to make more scoring passes. The Wreckers made use of their overall faster jamming abilities and really made it difficult for the Clubbers to keep up once lead was given to them.

The half saw the Clubbers up by approx 20 points, and it was clearly still anyone's game.
The final score was Utica Clubbers 177- Rome Wreckers 105.

MVP's were Summer of Sam for the Wreckers and Short E Fuze for the Clubbers.

Also making their public debut with CNYRD were refs Doom Buggy, XS'V Force, and Mr T.

The next intraleague bout will take place on April 30th, in a full production public event, between The Utica Clubbers and the Blue Collar Betties.

The next Friends and Family bout will be on Sunday May 29th at 12pm. Look for more details soon!

CNYRD kicks off another round of new skater training

On Wed. 4/6 and Sat 4/9, CNYRD hosted two open house events in preparation for our new skater training series which starts Wed 4/13/11. We had a great turnout with 25+ new girls and a couple of guys ready to start skating.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO GET INVOLVED!!!!

Basic skating class starts this week on Wednesday from 7-10pm, and runs Wednesdays 7-10p and Saturdays 10a-12p for 4 weeks at JFK Arena, 500 W Embargo St in Rome NY. The cost is $30 for the month. Rental gear (skates, helmets, pads, etc) can be used in any combination needed for an additional $5 per use.
Once basic skating ends on May 7th, the same time slots will be used for New Skater Training running for 12 weeks, the goal being to have all participants pass the WFTDA minimum skills requirements at the end of the 12 weeks, and hopefully be drafted onto a home team by August! The costs stay the same throughout, although those who move on to New Skater Training will also be expected to purchase their own insurance and gear relatively soon into the training.

Our next opportunity to learn from the ground up will start in September 2011, but we always accept transfer skaters from other leagues and those with prior non-derby skating experience if we can safely jump them into practices.

Bout Recap 4/2/2011: CNY All-Stars at Albany

On Saturday 4/2/2011 CNYRD's CNY All-Stars traveled to Albany NY to participate in a historic double header bout event.

The first bout of the night pitted the new Capital District Trauma Authority against our brother league, The Quadfathers, in the first ever men's roller derby bout between two NY based men's leagues. The Washington Ave Armory was packed, and it seemed that for some who were experiencing men's derby for the first time, it was shocking to see the big hits, hard falls, and aggressive play that the boys love so much. CDTA jumped out to an early lead, and despite the Quadfathers coming back to a small lead before the half, ultimately CDTA took the game 110-77. It was great fun for our players, staff, friends, and fans to see the guys take the track and do so well.

The main event started with CNY jumping out to an early lead. The first 6 jams of this game truly decided the outcome with CNY grabbing a solid lead and holding it the rest of the game;

The first jam saw Albany jammer Dottie Damage #10k thrown into the penalty box on a major track cut drawn by CNY blocker Moody Obsession, clearing the way for CNY jammer Spin Spin Sugar #230 to score a 15-0 first jam. The following 5 jams heavily favored CNY, as Albany was held to only 1 or 2 points as CNY continued to rack them up.

Ultimately, the CNY All Stars won this game on a combination of smart jam calling strategies, big power jams that saw the Albany jammer and sometimes multiple blockers in the penalty box, and excellent back-of-pack blocking courtesy mainly of Moody Obsession and Cereal Suicide, usually on alternating jams.

The final score was 135-82 in favor of CNY. This breaks a long awaited streak of CNY and Albany matchups going back to 2009 that always saw Albany as the victor, which culminated at last year’s Empire Skate Showdown when CNY lost 57-59 to Albany in a nail biter final jam for second place in the tournament.

This was also the retirement bout for Albany founder and star Dottie Damage #10k, who will be out at least the rest of this season, and we already cant wait to share the track with her again. Love you Dottie!

Central New York Roller Derby is proud to announce that we have selected The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter as our 2011 Non-Profit Partner.
Each year, CNYRD selects a local non-profit whose goals are closely aligned with our own to work with throughout the season. As our 2011 Non-Profit Partner, The Arc will receive a portion of the gate revenue from each of CNYRD's seven home bouts. Staff of The Arc will also join us as our guests at special 2011 bouts.
CNYRD and The Arc share a spirit of community inclusion and a mission to provide athletic and recreational opportunities to people of all abilities.

As we did last year, $1 of each ticket sold at the door at our 7 public home bouts will be set aside for The Arc, and after the season ends in September we will present them a check with the total. We will also have donation cans available for fans that would like to give more.

Last year, CNYRD raised $1230.00 for YWCA of the Mohawk Valley's domestic violence prevention programs and presented them a check at their 'Take Back The Night' event last October. Our goal is to beat this amount each subsequent year.

Saturday 4/9/2011: Rome Wreckers vs Utica Clubbers

On Saturday April 9th, 2011, CNYRD will host the first in a series of intraleague bouts leading up to our season championship on July 30th. This bout will be a 'Friends and Family' event. What this means is that we invite you, our friends and family, to come watch with a suggested donation at the door of $3.

There are no programs, no food and drink for sale, no video screens, no vendors, no halftime show, no fancy introductions etc......this is bare bones roller derby. We run it as a regulation bout in every way, and we take it very seriously, but it is not a full production event. We *might* have league merchandise available for sale.

This is a great chance for you to see how the home teams stack up against each other for future games, and also a nice way to get to know your favorite players when there's not the craziness of a full bout to distract us. We will all get together after the bout at the Nail Creek Pub in Utica for an informal afterparty.

There will be 6 intraleague games total, a full double round robin, and the championship game. The dates and matchups of these games are:

This Saturday is going to get WILD! The CNY All-Stars are hitting the road with our friends The Quadfathers to the Washington Ave Armory in Albany for a big event. The doors open at 5pm, and the first bout of the evening will be at 6pm as the Captal District Trauma Authority, Albany's first men's roller derby team, plays The Quadfathers. This bout will mark the debut of men's derby in the captial area, and the first public bout for CDTA. Come out and cheer for our boys in Orange as they square off against the new kids on the block. If you've never seen men's derby, this is THE bout to start your love affair with the sport off right!

Following the men's bout, CNYRD's CNY All-Stars will take the track vs the Albany All-Stars in a much anticipated re-match of the semi-final game of last year's Empire Skate Showdown in which CNY lost 57-59 in a nailbiting last jam. CNYRD and AASRD have competed very closely over the past 2 years, and we hope to walk away from this bout showing what kind of chemistry the new and improved CNYRD travel team has, featuring lots of new talent and transfers from multiple other leagues (plus fancy new uniforms courtesy of the support of the Nail Creek Pub in Utica!!!)

Bout Recap 3/19/2011: CNY All-Stars @ Lehigh Valley Hissyfits

We bring you good news: specifically, a 177-142 victory over the Hissyfits in the CNY All-Stars first game of the season.

This bout was a lively one! With a sellout crowd of the building's capacity of 600, by 5 minutes before the scheduled whistle time there were lines out the door, around the building, and through the parking lot for both the will call and ticket purchase lines. With bout staff doing everything in their power to get people in quickly, on top of dealing with all of our needs to get folks who made the drive from Utica in OK (thank you LVRG for helping us out!), we were able to get going 15 minutes late with no complaints from anyone involved....from what we could tell this crowd was INTO their derby! It was so loud from the fans that both teams were having trouble hearing whistles, and we all know a Fox 40 gets LOUD! It was a great time.

This bout was decided on power jams- but Gutshot, the All-Stars MVP, is the first to admit that it's the blockers who matter most during a power play. Gutshot scored 26 points in a power jam in the first half which contributed greatly to the All-Stars breaking ahead and gaining momentum.

“I didn't expect (to be MVP) because I thought that my blockers deserved it,” said Gutshot. “I would have been nothing without my blockers; almost all of my points were in power jams.”

The All-Stars were up by twenty at the half, and V-Diva put on a fireworks show in the final jam, scoring 30 points in a Lehigh Valley powerjam. It wasn't enough to close the gap, and the bout ended 177-142, but 30 points? We tip our helmets.

Parker Paxa Punch took home the MVP trophy for the Hissyfits. Parker has been a staple on the Hissyfits since 2009.

Didn't make the trip to Pennsylvania? Hoping we'll show up closer to home? On April 2, the All-Stars storm the Washington Ave Armory, where they'll take on the ladies of the Albany All-Stars. The two teams will meet for the first time since last year's nail-biting 59-57 semi-final game at the Empire Skate Showdown. We know a few fierce CNY skaters who are looking to avenge that loss, and you know our skates are actually powered by crowd noise (hint hint!)

Want to Join? 2011 Recruitment starts April 6th!!!!

We are sorry to have been so vague on our plans for the next recruitment class over the past months. We have finalized our summer schedule and now we can get you all on skates! We've already had an amazing outpouring of interest for potential new skaters, and we hope to see another super-sized recruitment class graduate in August.

[Drumroll] and here's the details:
On Wednesday April 6th from 7-10pm and on Saturday April 9th from 10a-12p, we will host a series of Meet & Greet / Open House / Open Skates at JFK Arena in Rome NY (map below)
This is a chance to come meet the girls and guys, talk about the program, see some examples of drills, and even lace up some skates and strap on some pads (we provide!) and try out some skating. These two dates have NO COSTS....they are 100% free.

Starting Wed April 13th, we will have Basic Skating classes every Wed 7-10pm and Saturdays 10a-12p for 4 weeks, ending on Saturday May 7th. These classes will concentrate solely on the basics...strides, crossovers, stops, stance, balance, etc. At the end of the 4 weeks those that are ready may move into our 12 week newbie training program. For those who may need more time with the basics, we will make floor time available during newbie classes at one end of the arena to continue skating and practicing for the next newbie class.

Newbie training will keep the same schedule, and will start Wed May 11th and run through Sat July 30th. In this 12 week training period, you will learn everything you need to be a beginner derby player. Our goal is to have you pass the WFTDA's minimum skating skills test and be a scrimmage ready skater by August.

Now, for costs:

as we said, the meet and greets are free.
the beginner classes will be either $30 for the month, or $5 for each class you attend.
Once newbie class starts, the fee is $30 per month. This is the same as our regular league members pay for dues, so there will be no jump in prices after newbie class is over.
At any point during new skater training (Basic Skating, Newbie Class) if anyone needs to use our rental skates or pads, its $5 per use (skates&pads, just skates, just pads, whatever, its $5)
You will be expected by the end of Basic Skating to also pay for a skating insurance policy through WFTDA. The exact fee will be no more than $55 and will cover you for the rest of 2011.
You will be expected by the end of Newbie Class (end of July) to own all of your own gear. The recruitment staff will go over all of this for you and we will organize times with some of our sponsors to be fitted and check out different products we recommend. Ask us before you buy anything!

We cant wait to see a new group of bright shining faces this summer, and by next fall we hope to see a lot of new bout ready skaters and maybe even a 4th home team (!)

3/18/2011: CNYRD and The Peacemaker Program at 'Come to the Table' 2011

CNY Roller Derby recently participated in "Come to the Table" and event put on by The Peacemaker Program to raise funds for their programs involving mediation, facilitation, conflict management, and conflict resolution. "Come to the Table" is an event that many local community members and groups get involved in by creating a table that will later be auctioned off. A handful of members of CNYRD got together and created a table themed "Let Them Eat Skate" which included a real pair of roller skates and a cake post card slice on each plate. The event started on Friday March 18th with a Red Carpet Evening at Harts Hill Inn, where initial bidding began, followed by the main event Saturday March 19th. After two days of bidding and many people checking out the tables, bidding was finished and our table raised $210 for The Peacemaker Program.

Feeling like a road trip? With weather like this, who isn't? Head on down to Pennsylvania to see our road opener. The CNYRD All-Stars take on Lehigh Valley at 7 pm at the Independence Family Fun Center in Schnecksville, Pa, looking to pick up their first victory of the season against V-Diva and the Hissyfits. Your favorite CNYRD skaters, like Moody Obsession, Pied Viper and Slay West are back, while you can see transfer skaters Spin Spin Sugar, Sinful Pleasures and Cereal Suicide settle in for their first full season with CNYRD.

In last season's meeting at CNYRD's home track, the JFK Civic Center in Rome, CNYRD's travel team, skating as the Utica Clubbers, came away with a 119-96 victory. CNYRD utilized strong pack control and deployed quick-footed blocker Moody Obsession to shut down Lehigh Valley's leading scorer, jammer V-Diva. Moody Obsession held V-Diva to just 58 points and sent her back to the locker room with a second-period expulsion, paving the way for CNYRD's victory.

In this season's rematch, the Hissyfits will turn to V-Diva to avoid a loss on their home track. CNYRD returns veteran skaters including blocker/jammer Moody Obsession, blockers Lady Die Mentia and Slay West, and jammers Mean Squeak and Farmer's Slaughter. Several former Utica Rollergirls will start their first full season with CNYRD, including jammers Spin Spin Sugar and Sinful Pleasures and blocker Cereal Suicide.

Look for CNYRD this Saturday in the Utica St Patrick's Day Parade!

Our longest running yearly tradition, the Utica St Patrick's Day Parade, is something we look forward to every year. Last year the travel team headed off early to a bout in Burlington VT while our newbies, refs, NSO's, family, and friends took to the streets to represent us by handing out season schedules and free bout tickets for our season opener.

This year we planned better! The league will be out in full force this Saturday to show you how much we love Utica and Central New York. We've even got some parade suprises that may or may not include a float with a derby prom queen in a duck tape dress (shhhh!).

Our girls will have a limited amount of free bout tickets which will be good for our season opener on Sat 4/30 at JFK Arena in Rome when the Utica Clubbers take on the Blue Collar Betties.

If you want to grab our attention and get YOUR free ticket, we encourage rowdy support of roller derby. Make signs, wave your arms, make a bunch of noise when you see us. Help us show the parade that CNY Roller Derby is your favorite group out there!!!!!! We LOVE to get pictures with our fans, so have your cameras ready!!

Tough Cookie Bake Sale, April 23rd at the Tramontane Cafe

On April 23rd 2011, CNY Roller Derby will host our 3rd Tough Cookie Bake Sale at the Tramontane Cafe, 1105 Lincoln Ave, Utica NY.

There will be baked goods of all kinds, including vegan and raw options. Expect games (who doesnt want to challenge a rollergirl to games?!), and also live music by Phylactic!

Funds from the bake sale will go to offset costs of our 2011 home season, such as ASCAP, insurance, printed materials, etc.

This event is exactly 1 week from our 2011 home opener at JFK Arena in Rome. Come out and show your support! (and buy your presale tickets for the bout for only $8! hint, hint!)

Happy Valentines Day from CNY Roller Derby.

Here at CNYRD, we give each other some serious derby love for the holiday. But our 'valentines' are a little different than the hallmark variety, although sometimes they can be the same color as roses....or chocolates....and sometimes they even have a gooey middle...

Here's a great example courtesy of Betty B Ready that someone gave her at practice yesterday. Notice the heart shaped outlined in beeeeuitful blue which indicates expert valentine delivery. If you like to give and receive valentines as much as we do, come play with us!!

The Rome Wreckers' new look!

We're excited to unveil the logo of our newest home team, The Rome Wreckers. Once again, our logo superhero Rob Perry came to our aid and dealt with all manner of picky requests to get what we were after, and we are very pleased with the result. Rob was the contest winner at the beginning of the 2010 season for designing the Blue Collar Betties logo, and he's also helped us re-tool the CNY pinup girl, and even recently helped the Quadfathers fancy up their look.

Long story short: We have altogether too many facebook accounts for CNYRD. We have one for the Clubbers, on for the Betties, one for the Wreckers, and two or three for the league. It's nuts trying to keep all of these updated, and probably annoying to see the same post 18 times in your newsfeed if you're friends with or like all of them.

So in an effort to make sure that YOU, our wonderful fans, keep updated on league happenings, make it easier to tag us in your posts, photos, etc, and overall make us easier to contact, we are cancelling all but ONE facebook account, our Central New York Roller Derby 'Company' page.

CNYRD hopes that you have had a chance to see the recent coverage by Utica's Observer Dispatch newspaper on roller derby as a means of physical fitness. We are so proud to be recognized by the community as a healthy lifestyle choice and that the media is choosing to spread the word that roller derby is a great way to stay healthy. Unfortunately due to some confusion in our local area, the OD printed a different league's recruitment information attached to this article. The information they printed was for a completely separate league called The Utica Rollergirls, which has no affiliation with CNY Roller Derby.

An open recruitment session beginning with an open house will start mid-February at the (soon-to-be-announced!) new permanent home of CNYRD, an exciting brand new building which will serve as our private year-round training and scrimmage facility in Utica.

After the open house, new skaters will have the option of attending 4 weeks of 'boot camp' which will teach the basic skills in preparation for our 12 week newbie class. The class meets Wednesdays from 7-9pm and Saturdays from 10a-12p. By the end of the newbie class, skaters are ready to graduate into competition ready league members. Our recruitment staff, reachable at the above email address, can give you more details.

CNYRD prides ourselves on offering a multitude of options to its members-
For people interested in roller derby as a more recreational sport, players have the option of skating on one of our home teams, The Utica Clubbers, The Blue Collar Betties, or The Rome Wreckers, who play against each other (and occasionally outside leagues' home teams) on a regular basis. Skaters on home teams typically practice 1-2 times per week and compete at least monthly in season.

For skaters looking to take it to the next level, we offer competitive placement from our home team rosters onto the CNY All-Stars travel team, which competes for international rankings within the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, and offers the opportunity for travel and play against the best teams in the northeast US and beyond. Skaters on the All-Stars typically practice 2-3 times per week and compete up to 2 times per month in-season.

Whether you thrive in a one-on-one instruction environment, or you're from a background of large group activities or team sports, you can find a comfortable home on CNYRD.

As you'll see from the OD's article, roller derby can be a great way to stay healthy. We find its also a perfect means to beat the Mohawk Valley's dreaded 'winter blues', and keeps our members excited about being active year round. The community surrounding flat track roller derby is also very supportive of healthy lifestyles. A group of skaters who have produced a roller derby workout DVD have even organized a totally free guided workout challenge via their facebook page which guides participants through an 8 week diet and exercise routine purely to promote healthy lifestyles, derby or not.

In short, Roller Derby makes you healthy. It creates a common social activity with a great group of people, and an extended community around the world. It provides great exercise, and healthy competition. CNY Roller Derby wants more area women to discover the benefits of this exciting sport, and with our current membership of close to 100 people, a new training facility, membership in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, and experienced captains and coaches, we feel we can provide a great roller derby experience. CNYRD hosts 3rd League Birthday Party: "The Black Eye Affair"

Traditionally, CNYRD's league birthday parties have happened just before the holidays. But every year, there is just so much else going on that we decided to clear out a Saturday in early January and really celebrate. And this year we have a lot to be thankful for; Our acceptance as a WFTDA member league, our best year of recruitment to date including a newly graduated newbie class of almost 30 new skaters, the end of our quest to find a great tavel team coach (Die-Lon), and a number of very talented skaters having transferred to CNYRD from as far away Georgia and from all over the region.

We took over the Bunker Cafe at Utica Center for Development for the night of Jan 8th, and the event was called 'The Black Eye Affair' with an 80's prom theme. We saw everything from duck tape dresses to bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses to some really fancy tuxedos. It was so awesome to see everyone get all done up for a night that didnt involve stinky pads!

Some highlights included Pippi Hardknocking playing the best hostess/MC ever to pass out great raffle prizes from our sponsors; league gift to Die-Lon of a personalized Wicked Skatewear CNYRD hoodie; league gifts to the refs of personalized CNYRD keyrings; a dance off that will go down in history; a white elephant gift exchange which ended in granny panties being sported by a bunch of people; a cheesy prom photo booth setup which only got better the more it fell apart as the night went on; and more....

We wanted to send a HUGE thank you to The Big Krenowsky and Piss N Ginger for coming up with the best catering plan for $6 a head that we've EVER seen, selling tickets, buying the food, cooking it, setting up, well, you get the idea....these girls made it happen! Also thanks to Newks and Forrest and some members of our Non-Bout Events committee for helping keep things running smoothly and cleaning up.

CNYRD Announces 2011 Season Schedule!

CNYRD is proud to announce our 2011 Season Schedule!!
This season marks big changes in CNYRD. We will have a double round robin competition amongst our home teams; The Utica Clubbers, The Blue Collar Betties, and The Rome Wreckers; the second round of which will be public bouts, culminating in the first ever CNYRD Championship Game on July 30th.
Also new this year, the CNYRD travel team is now called "The CNY All-Stars", who will be competing against teams from all over the Northeast for standings in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

Look out Central New York, there’s going to be some killer roller derby in 2011! Last night, at the league’s Utica practice facility, we graduated our newest class of skaters.

After completing twelve weeks of intensive derby training and passing physical and written assessments, CNYRD’s newest recruits are eligible to be drafted to the league home teams in January. This is CNYRD’s largest class to date! We had our largest turnout ever when we held our open skate back in September. Over fifty people showed up, including about twelve men who were interested in training to become refs! About twenty-five girls and six guys stuck with it and together learned all things derby. Once again, we got people from all walks of life. Some that had never participated in sports before, and others with experience in in-line skating, skateboarding, and running. We have girls from Remsen, Herkimer, Utica, Clinton and a girl who had recently moved from Oswego and had started with a team there. Along with the graduating class of new skaters, the league has also welcomed nine transfer skaters with derby experience from another league in recent weeks, making our derby family even bigger! Welcome to the CNYRD family, ladies and gentlemen.

CNYRD Collecting Toys for Jams for Tots!

CNY Roller Derby is teaming up with Jams for Tots this year to make local children's holiday season a little more playful! Bring any unwrapped new toy to the Tramontane Cafe between November 15th and December 1st. On December 4th all of the toys collected will be presented to the Jams for Tots event taking place at The Electric Company from 2:00pm-2:00am. CNY Roller Derby will also be donating some of our merch in a gift basket to be auctioned off for the cause. Please join us in making this holiday season special for the kids in the area!

CNYRD's Quest for a new home on City Limits!

Back in September, the crew from City Limits, the weekly TV show put out by Utica mayor David Roefaro , came to one of our home bouts and did some filming. They wanted to concentrate on showing our success with our events, the ladies of our league, and our quest for a dependable year round home.

CNYRD Presents Donation to YWCA of Mohawk Valley!

Last night, the hard work of CNYRD and the support of our awesome fans paid off for the YWCA of Mohawk Valley. Little Bastard, the league's Chairwomen, presented a donation of $1230 to Natalie Brown, the Executive Director of the YWCA, in front of the Mayor of Utica and the marchers gathered for Take Back the Night.

Over the 2010 season, the league collected one dollar from each ticket sold at our home bouts at the JFK Civic Arena in Rome to put toward our end-of-the-season donation to the YWCA's domestic violence programs. Little Bastard, addressing the crowd last night, explained that we selected the YWCA because both CNYRD and the YWCA share a commitment to the empowerment of women. And it was fitting that we were able to present our donation at Take Back the Night because the annual march is devoted to stopping sexual assault and abuse. Frisky Whiskey, Mean Squeak, Willa Crasher, Doris Doomsday, and Cereal Suicide presented the check with Little Bastard.

BIG NEWS for Central New York derby fans!!!

As of November 2010, Central New York Roller Derby will have a new structure. The public has been awesome in supporting our teams, The Utica Clubbers and The Blue Collar Betties. Since our beginnings we have wanted to represent the entire region in flat track roller derby, and we have always felt guilty that only The Utica Clubbers were representing CNYRD to the outside derby world, since we are so much bigger than just Utica in our membership. The Utica Clubbers name was conceived before we ever had the idea of CNYRD as a league name, and so we just stuck to it. Earlier this year we started The Blue Collar Betties as a B-team, and they have done amazing both at home and away of showcasing our newer skaters to the derby world. But as we grow, things must change, and this change is pretty exciting!

As of the end of our 2010 competition season in September, we have had a HUGE influx of membership. We had a wonderful newbie class graduate in August, and also gained experienced transfer skaters from as far away as Georgia and as close to home as Utica and Syracuse in surprising numbers. Our current newbie class set to graduate in December has over 40 new skaters currently. On September 1st CNYRD announced that we finally met our biggest goal since our founding; to officially represent our region in WFTDA sanctioned play. Because of all of these exciting changes, we are also changing up how we roll!

Starting November 2010, CNYRD will have a third league team established. They will be known as 'The Rome Wreckers'.

The three existing teams, The Utica Clubbers, The Blue Collar Betties, and The Rome Wreckers, will make up the new Central New York Roller Derby League as 'home' teams, all of which will be chosen by draft pick from our entire current membership. When our league competes against outside leagues for standings, we will compete as the CNY All-Stars travel team, made up of the best skaters from all three league teams.

Our 2011 season will be comprised of both travel team and home team bouts. You can expect a running round-robin season of games between our home teams which will culminate in a championship bout to name the CNYRD 2011 league champion team. Our travel team bouts will feature other leagues' travel teams vs the CNY All-Stars.

Congradulations to Slay West, Gutshot, and Moody Obsession on being elected our 2010-2011 home team captains!!!

This Friday, Oct 1st, CNY Roller Derby wil be participating in the 2nd Annual Utica Zombie Walk. Some good friends of our got this going last year, and we had a fantastic time. Because what goes together better than rollergirls and zombies, right!?

A couple weeks ago during the Utica Music and Arts Fest we got together with photographer/graphic designer Darrell Nieman and ghoulish makeup artist Katrina Burnett and created some ummmm....'ads' for the event. These are SO COOL! Thanks Darrell and Katrina for making us zombie-rific!

If you're interested in being a part of the zombie walk, registration is from 5-7pm on Friday at the Uptown Theater on Genessee St in Utica. The walk kicks off from there at 7. During registration you can hear DJ's spinning live tunes while creepy rooftop footage of last year's zombie attack plays on the big screen (courtesy of our own grambo!)

Tough Cookie Bake/Yard Sale Event Recap

On Saturday 9/25/2010, CNY Roller Derby hosted its second annual bake sale fundraising event at the Tramontane Cafe in Utica. Last year's event featured classic derby movies shown on the big screen an a chance to mingle with the girls and learn about roller derby.

This year's event got a lot cooler!

Dubbed 'The Tough Cookie Yard and Bake Sale', we pulled out all the stops to make this event a really fun way to fundraise in our off season. Assembled by Heather 'Freegan Brutal' Snogles and her motley crew of Non-Bout Events Committee ninjas, they really put together a nice time. Since the date of the event coincided with the streaming of WFTDA Eastern Regionals hosted by our friends at Suburbia Roller Derby in Yonkers, we had the tournament streaming on the big screen courtesy of the wonderful folks at Derby News Network (We love you DNN!). On top of the already awesome bake sale, we added a yard sale portion of the event this year under tents in the lot across Lincoln Ave from the Tram.

In case you didn't know, CNY Roller Derby has an amazing collection of bakers, cooks, crafters, and collectors of cool vintage stuff in its membership. A few are even professional confectioners! There were Gluten free treats, raw food options, Vegan yummy stuff, and a ton of decadent, amazing, tastey other treats all priced very low. By the time all the food was there, we had nearly 2 full 8' tables stuffed with baked goods!

The yard sale portion was very cool indeed...because after all, what's more fun than going shopping through derby girls' closet leftovers?! There were clothes, books, baby items, furniture, toys, and crafts, just to name a few.

To make things even more awesome, The Tram kept the food coming! Many of us took shift breaks and got our favorite Tram sandwiches for lunch and/or dinner, and continued to get waaaaay caffienated to keep us going strong. The gracious Tram regulars were awesome as usual about the bunch of us overtaking 'their' place for the day:) Many of our friends, family, and fans who had never been to the Tram before came to check it out and loved the great food, drinks, and cozy atmosphere and have said they'll be back! Thank you SOOOOO much Garrett and Robin for alowing us to take over your business again this year!

We also had our merch table set up just like at bouts, and we were so happy that people took this chance to get some more tshirts and swag. Also made special for the event were recycled bottlecap buttons made from the Tram's own bottlecaps, our recycled bout programs, and the love and elbow sweat of Little Bastard:)

Another serious thank you is due to the Foodshed Buying Club for their wonderful donations of awesome food for the sale.

Overal, the league netted more than $900.00 from this event. This money will be spent directly to foster the future of CNYRD by purchasing sets of pads and helmets from a local skate shop for our new skaters to use while they get started in the sport. This both helps CNYRD grow as a league, keeps everyone safe while learnign the sport, and supports the local economy. Thank you for helping us continue to bring in new people who are excited to learn to play the sport!

On Monday Septemeber 20th The Observer Dispatch in Utica ran an article about a former practice space of CNYRD's called 'Skate-A-Rama'. You can see the article's text HERE.

CNYRD praticed at Skate-A-Rama from Dec 2007 through March 2009, and was coached for a time by the rink's owner, Bill Schmelcher.

The article highlights Bill's troubles with a burdensome tax debt and the threat of forclosure. Unfortunately, the printed article in Monday's paper used an old photo of former members of CNYRD playing roller derby at Skate-A-Rama, with a misleading caption which has caused much concern in the past few days by friends, family, and fans who think we are losing our current practice space.

CNYRD has not practiced in this facility since March 2009. We hold summer practices and events at JFK Arena in Rome NY and we currently have our winter practices at the Utica Center for Development (former YMCA) on Washington Ave in Utica. CNYRD wishes Bill and Skate-A-Rama the best of luck in this unfortunate situation. We hope that the community does not lose yet another skating rink, along with one of the only options for cheap indoor recreation during teh long winter months.

To sum up: We are NOT losing our home!!!! Thank you all for the concern, but we have practice space, and we have some great opportunities on the horizon which may be announced soon.

The Utica Clubbers Take It All in "The 315 Throwdown"

On Sunday, September 19th Central New York Roller Derby’s (CNYRD) Utica Clubbers took on Assault City Roller Derby (ACRD) in the long-awaited rematch, “The 315 Throwdown.” Hundreds of fans from around the region, including many who drove from Syracuse, came to the JFK Civic Arena in Rome to witness the thruway rivals play each other again.

The last time these teams played each other marked the emergence CNYRD, a new league comprised of mostly inexperienced skaters and skaters borrowed from other leagues. Sunday was a very different story. CNYRD now has two teams and new recruits all the time. And the league recently became WFTDA certified.

The Clubbers and Assault City both played a rough game, but CNYRD took control from the first whistle. In the very first jam, Clubbers’ jammer Mean Squeak took lead jammer status and managed to make three scoring passes before Assault City’s jammer could score a single point. Mean Squeak kept it up, scoring 50 points in the bout. The Clubbers continued to build on this mastery, ending the first half with a 40-point lead over Syracuse. Things did not improve for Assault City in the second half. Their jammers, with the exception of Blaze, could not penetrate Utica’s ferocious blocking by Lady Die Mentia, Moody Obsession, and Slay West. The final score was Clubbers 146, Assault City 66.

The two teams awarded MVP trophies at the end of the night. The MVP for Assault City was awarded to Chainsaw Mama. The MVP for the Utica Clubbers was awarded to Moody Obsession.

Sunday's Bout to Feature Heather Case and S.A.M.

On Tuesday September 14th 2010, CNYRD hosted another Open House / Meet and Greet / Recruitment event at JFK Arena in Rome. We had an awesome turnout for interest in our upcoming new skater class, and got to see some wonderful family and friends who came to check things out and skate a bit. (photo cred Hispanic Attack)

There IS STILL TIME for people interested in becoming new skaters to join! The class runs 7-10pm on Tuesdays, starting September 21st and running for 12 weeks.

The class will be held at the gym at the Utica Center for Development, 726 Washington Ave in Utica NY. This is the former YMCA building for you locals. If we havent heard from you yet, please shoot an email to recruitment@cnyrollerderby.com and let us know to expect you, and show up on Tuesday!

New skaters are trained in a new-skater-only class once weekly, coached by our recruitment staff of veteran derby skaters. After the first 5-7 weeks of basics, 'newbies' are also invited to join into the advanced league practices. In total, new skaters will attend a minimum of 10 newbie practices and 3 advanced practices in a 12 week period.

By the end of the 12 weeks, our goal is to prepare you to take the WFTDA minimum skills assesments. Once you pass the skills and show us good attendance and willingness to help with the league, you are eligible for draft onto one of our 3 home teams.

The bottom line: YOU could be competing as a roller derby skater by January 2011!!!! Sound crazy? Have no skating experience? It's OK! We know how to get you there, we promise;)

Join us this SUNDAY, 9/19/2010 for CNYRD's last home bout event of the 2010 season as The Utica Clubbers take on Syracuse's Assault City Roller Derby in "The 315 Throwdown"!

Yes, you read that correctly....we're holding this bout on a Sunday afternoon! In conjunction with the Utica Music & Arts Festival (UMAF), we decided to change this one up a bit and offer a $2 discount to anyone that comes to the door with a UMAF bracelet on. We thought it would be a nice way to wind down from UMAF weekend and we know all of our friends who are organizing it could use a nice relaxing day after a crazy weekend of fun and music! Plus this gives you plenty of time to sleep in after Saturday's bands and still make the bout!

To give a little history, Assault City helped give CNYRD our start back in 2007, and our first big public event was against them in July 2008 when we skated as The Asylum City Lunatics in the original 315 Throwdown. Both teams have come a LONG way since those days. People still talk about what a great bout the Aud event was, and if you thought that was awesome, wait until you see how much both teams have improved!

We have reason to believe that there will be a HUGE amount of Syracuse fans in the house Sunday, so we need our cheering section to make theirs look small!!! C'mon out and get LOOOOUUUUDDD in support of CNY Roller Derby!!!

Today is a proud day for Central New York Roller Derby. Today we were accepted as a full member league in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. This is our single biggest accomplishment to date, and we are thrilled. This accompishment allows us to represent our region on a national and even international scale through the association's rankings.

This is an excerpt from our league's member handbook, which gives some insight on why we are so excited:

When we first looked into forming a league, we saw the website for the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and just assumed naively that every league out there lived up to the standards set forth for WFTDA leagues. We started from day 1 with meeting those requirements and bench marks as over-reaching goals, because we thought that’s just what you did to become involved in this sport. As we grew and learned more, we realized that there were plenty of other ways to be involved in Roller Derby and do it your own very fun, cool, effective, profitable way, but we always stuck to the idea that CNYRD would eventually represent WFTDA for our region, and kept working towards that goal.

CNYRD would like to extend very heartfelt thanks to some people/groups who mentored or helped us over the past year:
Black Cherry of CT Rollergirls, our derby mom from day one, for pushing us to be the best skaters we can be, and never letting us believe that doing any part of our business at 90% was enough.

Open House/Skate 9/14, New skater Class Starts 9/21!!!

LAST CHANCE in 2010 to become a skater or ref for CNY Roller Derby: We are hosting an open house-open skate-meet and greet on Tuesday Sept 14th from 7-10pm at the JFK Arena, 500 W Embargo St, Rome NY.

There is no obligation to join from attending...show up, meet the girls (and guys) of CNYRD, talk to us about how you'd like to be involved and tell us about yourselves. Best part is- It's all FREE. If you'd like to skate, you can sign a waiver, throw on some pads and skates that we supply, and cruise around with us for a couple hours.

If you decide you like it (and we KNOW you will!) we have a new skater class starting the very next week, on Tues Sept 21st from 7-10pm at the Utica Center for Development gym, 726 Washington St in Utica (former YMCA). The new skater program runs for 12 weeks, and covers everything you need to become an awesome new skater. We spend the first 4-6 weeks covering nothing but the basics- stance, strice, crossovers, balance, etc, and then we take a mini-assessment to see if you're ready for more complicated maneuvers. Once you're ready, we start showing you hitting, jumping, and all the other fun stuff. You'll also be invited at this point to also attend advanced practices simultaneously.

Overall, you have to attend 10 out of 12 of the newbie practices within the 12 week period, and also at least 3 of the advanced practices during the same timeframe.

The Long Island Roller Rebels will host the 'Empire Skate Showdown', bringing together 8 teams on 2 tracks for 12 total games in one day of crazy roller derby action.

Bout Recap, 8/14/2010

On Saturday 8/14/2010 CNY Roller Derby hosted a double header event which featured the Quadfathers vs. the CT Death Quads in a full length men's roller derby game, and The Utica Clubbers vs. CT Rollergirls' Yankee Brutals in the women's game.

Last November The Utica Clubbers traveled to Connecticut to take on the Yankee Brutals of CTRG. The Clubbers came home with a 35 points loss. This past weekend the Brutals came into John F Kennedy Arena in Rome, NY hoping to duplicate that performance from a year ago.

What a difference a year makes! The Clubbers, coming off a huge win over Lehigh Valley on 7/31, looked to continue their strong play against CT. Right from the opening whistle, the Clubbers let them know things were going to be different this time around.

In the first jam the fans saw the Clubbers' Gutshot cruise to a double grand slam and a 10 point lead. From there the girls never looked back. The Clubber defense suffocated the CT jammers only allowing one jammer to get through in the first seven jams and not allowing a single point until the 8th. By then the damage had been done as Utica held a 31 point lead. The Clubbers continued to pour it on and cruised into halftime with a 54-8 lead. The Clubbers took lead 15 times in 18 jams of the first half.

The second half saw nine different Clubbers go to the jammer line and the continued dominance on the defensive side of the game. In the 6th jam of the second half the Brutals tried to mount a comeback when Ramona Rotten took advantage of a power jam and scored 10 quick points, closing the gap to 42. The Clubber defense however quickly answered only allowing the Brutals to score one point in the next ten jams. In the end the Clubbers walked away with a 86-34 win.

In a roller derby tradition each team picks the other team's MVPs for the bout. MVP for the Yankee Brutals was Paula G. Imnaughty and for the Clubbers it was Moody Obsession.

Up next for the Utica Clubbers is the Empire Skate Showdown, the unofficial New York State Championships. The Clubbers will be riding a two game winning streak into the tournament where they will face the Hellions of Troy in the first round. The Clubbers defeated Troy back in April 97-71.

CNYRD serving brews at Saranac TONIGHT!!

Apparently we made a good impression as guest beer servers for The United Way at Saranac Thursday a couple weeks ago, because they have asked us back with even more great derby people to help out again TONIGHT. I guess not spilling a lot and not arm wrestling the public for beer makes us a good choice! :)

Tonight Saranac's Summer Concert Series has Night Ranger. Yup, you read that correctly- NIGHT RANGER.....like 'Sister Christian' from the 80's.

We had a blast working Saranac Thursday, and we absolutely adore the brewery folks and the United Way folks who make all of this happen. We're very excited to be considered for 2 spots in one summer. We love the community atmosphere at the brewery's events, and we are huge supporters of this year's United Way 'Live United' campaign.

So, come one down, see some great 80's rock, and have some awesome beers or Saranac sodas, and hang with CNYRD. We have to be good for our bout tomorrow, but YOU don't!

PS- knowing a rollergirl does not entitle anyone to free beer. Buy some drink tickets and stop being a cheapskate! :)

Saturday August 14th 2010 is going to be a big day for roller derby in Rome NY.

The doors to JFK Arena open at 4pm.
At 5pm, The Quadfathers take the track in their first full-length bout versus the Connecticut Death Quads. If you liked what you saw on May 8th in the men's scrimmage we hosted, you will LOVE seeing real team-on-team men's roller derby action.

At 7pm, the ladies of CNYRD's Utica Clubbers will take the track versus the CT Rollergirls' mixed A&B team. CNYRD is SOOOOO excited to be sharing the track with the CT Rollergirls, who have been some of our biggest proponents, helpers, and mentors both in building our league from the very beginning, and in the process of being a WFTDA apprentice. We look forward to sharing the track with them again (and showing them all that we've learned muahahaha! :)

After almost a year of travel planning CNYRD is excited to have a special guest for this bout, all the way from The Romsey Town Rollerbillies in Cambridge UK, our leopard and zombie green friend, Trash Gash.

On Saturday July 31st 2010, CNYRD's Utica Clubbers hosted the Lehigh Valley Roller Girls travel team at JFK Arena in Rome NY.

The Clubbers came away with what many will say is the biggest win in the teams young history. After a slow start and trailing by nine the Clubber’s Slay West stepped to the jammer line in the 6th jam and pulled off an 11 point jam that put the Clubbers back in the game. In the following jam Moody Obsession hammered down a Grand Slam to give the home town team their first lead of the game.

The fans in attendance were in for a treat after that. In the first half alone there were five lead changes. At the half the Clubbers had a narrow 42-40 lead in what was turning into a classic.

In the first 4 jams of the second half the fans saw a lead change and eventually a tie score at 46 all. Then #27 Mean Squeak came to the jammer line and put in a 5 point jam to give the Clubbers a lead they would hold onto for the rest of the game. Lehigh was not going to go down easily as they kept the game close and the fans on the edge of there seat until the final jam.

With a 15 point lead Utica sent Lady Die Mentia to the jammer line for the final jam. Lady Die known more for her blocking and devastating hits then her jamming skills did not disappoint. Lehigh quickly grabbed lead jammer status but was followed closely by Lady Die. After a big hit sent the Lehigh jammer to the track she was forced to call it off but not until Lady Die Mentia picked up 3 more points for the Clubbers and a 113 to 96 win.

In a roller derby tradition each team picks the other teams MVPs for the bout. MVP for Lehigh was Vanilla CreamHer and for the Clubbers it was team captain Slay West.

The players, refs, NSOs, fans, and literally everyone who watched the game was blown away by the level of play and team work demonstrated by the Clubbers. It was truly a team effort and the Clubbers look to be in good shape heading into the home stretch of their season. Which includes 2 more home bouts and the New York State Tournament in Long Island.

The Clubbers were proud to introduce Teddy Maulgame in her first bout on the Clubbers roster. Missing in action due to injuries and illness were familiar faces Murder Antoinette, Sic Lee Twist3d, and Little Bastard.

TONIGHT, Thursday 7/29, members of CNY Roller Derby will be teaming up with the United Way to volunteer as servers at Saranac Thursday. CNYRD was a part of the United Way's 'Live United' 2010 campaign (see photo), and we couldnt be happier to be giving back to the community in such a fun way.

ALSO, to promote our bout THIS SATURDAY against Lehigh Valley Rollergirls (PA), we will be giving out some FREE bout tickets......If you have CNYRD apparel, wear it, find one of us either pouring beer or in the crowd, and receive a FREE bout ticket. Dont have any CNY merchandise? Well, if you ask reeeeaaaallllyyy nicely we might give you one anyway, but only if you buy a tshirt at the bout so that next time we do giveaways you have one!

Next Home Bout: July 31st vs. Lehigh Valley Roller Girls

CNYRD's next home bout event will be held on Saturday July 31st at JFK Arena in Rome NY. The Utica Clubbers will compete against the Lehigh Valley Roller Girls, of PA. who are also an aspiring WFTDA league in the apprentice program like us. The competition promises to be fierce.

This event is being called "The Summer Scorcher" (aside from the obvious sweltering summer) because we are making it a special night for the volunteer firefighters of our area. Our penalty box supervisor Lura 'Box B*tch' Bessmer and her husband Eric (a long-time dedicated local firefighter, see tattoo pic below)suggested we do something special for all the people that save our houses from burning down and risk their skins every day for us crazy roller folk. We couldnt have agreed more! Plus, as luck would have it, July 31st is also the Honor America Days in Rome, a large local event with a parade (look for us skating!!! there may be free tickets if you're nice!), fireworks, music at Fort Stanwix, etc. We couldnt think of a better day to honor local firefighters than that!

We took a survey of which volunteer fire department each league member's home is covered by, and we are handing each of them a bunch of free tickets and a request to come represent their department at the bout. We hope to FILL the stands with our local/regional firefighters in their department shirts at the Scorcher! We want to see which one can get the loudest in support of their local girls on skates!!!! (There may even be some special prizes for the loudest, rowdiest bunch, hint hint)

As usual, advance sale tickets can be purchased for $10 each at the Tramontane Cafe or Cafe Domenico in Utica, or Bill's Variety in Rome. Bout Recap, 7/17/2010

On Saturday July 17th 2010, CNYRD's Utica Clubbers hosted the Garden State Rollergirls travel team at JFK Arena in Rome NY. Touting a new sound system for the announcers just purchased by the league and lighting&video production courtesy of Entertainment Services, along with industrial barn fans for temperature control, the arena never looked better (although we're still working on getting the needed amount of electricity to power all our toys....coming soon!). DJ Deaf Geoff was spinning tunes, S-Dot and Ida Feltersnatch were on the mics, and CNYRD's own Rainbow Blight sang a beautiful National Anthem to start the night off

The Clubbers were proud to introduce Pied Viper #333, and Short E. Fuze #4'12 in their first bout on the Clubbers roster. Missing due to injuries and bout requirements were familiar faces Murder Antoinette, Sic Lee Twist3d, and The Chiropractor.

The players, refs, NSO's, fans, and literally everyone who watched the game was blown away by the level of play exhibited by these two teams. The crowd commented favorably on the new sound system, saying that everyong in the floor and stands were able to hear the announcers clearly. Many thanks to our loyal fans whose ticket fees have helped provide this new equipment!

The final score after careful stat checking after the game was 108-81 in favor of Garden State.

MVP's (voted on by the opposing team) went to Lixxie Stixx of GSRG and Moody Obsession of the Clubbers.

The game started with GSRG jumping out to an early lead and holding the Clubbers to only 1 point scored in the first few jams. GSRG held onto this lead throughout the whole game, but the defensive play and strategy were amazing. During the first half, Clubbers had lead jammer 9 times in a row during which time GSRG was held to only 1 scored point. The first half ended with GSRG at 52, Clubbers at 28.

Despite GSRG's first half lead, the second half was anyone's game. The total second half score was 56-53 in favor of GSRG.

Some highlights for the Clubbers included (in no particular order): Lady Die-Mentia's double hip check on turn one during the first half throwing 2 GSRG skaters airborn into the infield and letting the Clubbers jammer by; Pied Viper's double grand slam power jam in which she was thrown in the air, rolled 3 times, and still managed to score 10 points; and Hotcakes' amazing one-footed pass of the entire pack on the inside line of turns 3-4 while her whole body hung over the infield.

Garden State were wonderful guests and special thanks to refs Thrillhouse and Helen Bayonne for coming out with the team. We cant wait to do it again, and hopefully by then we'll both be full WFTDA member leagues;)

CNYRD beats the heat, thank you ROME!

It's no secret that Central New York is experiencing quite the heat wave in the past few days. It was over 90F by noon on Tues 7/6, and we knew that our arena practice space was not going to be so nice to skate in later that evening for newbie practice. The vets were planning on doing some off-skates work at the arena, too.
Thanks to the awesome folks at the Parks and Recreation Dept in the city of Rome, we were able to swap our normal track time for pool time at the city pool right outside the arena doors.
It was a great way to end the hot, hot day, and was great exercise in place of skating.

A big thank you to Mike and the City of Rome, and also to our lifeguards who stayed late to let us swim, and had no idea what to do with a group of 30 rowdy rollergirls (and guys) (but we listened to them better than our own referees....hmmmmm:)

Next Home Bout: July 17th vs. Garden State Rollergirls

We couldn't be more excited for September 2010! After our season closer on 9/19, CNYRD is going to start our off-season right, by going to watch some amazing roller derby- last year WFTDA's Eastern Regionals were in North Carolina, and none of us were able to make the drive. This year, they're right in our own backyard! The decision is not whether to go, it's simply who to cheer for!

Our good friends at Suburbia Roller Derby (Westchester, NY)
will host “Derby in the Burbs”, the 2010 Women’s Flat Track Derby Association
(WFTDA) Eastern Regional Tournament at the Westchester County Center in White
Plains, Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26, 2010. The tournament,one of the Big Five tournaments, will feature the top ten roller derby teams in the
WFTDA East Region, which extends from Montreal to North Carolina. The top three teams from this tournament will move on to the WFTDA Championship in Chicago in November.

Saturday, July 10th CNYRD's Blue Collar Betties will be traveling for their first official away game to participate in a double header event hosted by Roc City Roller Derby in Rochester, NY featuring home teams and B-teams from all over the state.

Billed as 'Global Harming', the event will feature Roc City's RottenChesters vs Blue Collar Betties at 6pm, and Roc City's 5-h8-5's vs. Ithaca's Bluestockings at 8pm.

Bout Recap, 6/26/2010

On June 26th 2010 @ 6 pm the doors to the Kennedy Arena in Rome, NY opened to host CNYRD's Utica Clubbers VS. the ROC CITY RottenChesters of Rochester, NY in "Summer Crush", CNYRD's summer kickoff bout.

As everyone arrived they got to witness the new track setup of event lighting and a large rear projection screen courtesy of Entertainment Services of Rome NY, along with the band "Negative Truth" and music by DJ Deaf Geoff. The screen showed the Clubbers' new headshots by Ramon Aiello of Phodograph.com and also CNYRD's sponsors and recruitment info.

The barbershop quartet "Firestorm" sang the National Anthem to get the bout started. During the equipment check on the big screen was a demo of how roller derby is played.

The Clubbers jumped out to an early lead of 32 points over the Rottenchesters in the first few jams.

During the first period, as Murder Antoinette (Clubbers) rounded the first turn Poplockndropya (Rottenchesters) dropped her with a beautiful shoulder hit. Unfortunately Murder's left knee hit the concrete hard and she may have torn an ACL. Sic Lee Twist3d from the Clubbers also was faced with a knee injury which may be another ACL problem. Both ladies stayed out of the game in the second half but are recovering well.

Halftime ended with the Clubbers leading the Rottenchesters by over 40 points. As the second half got under way many skaters from both teams faced penalties
which caused the referees to have several meetings in center of the track.
The game ended with a final score of 165 Clubbers to 72 Rottenchesters.

MVP's for the night where awarded to Queen Kicktoria from the Rottenchesters and
to Farmer's Slaughter from the Clubbers, and both ladies received awesome MVP trophies made from re-purposed Utica Club cans in the shape of rollerskates made by CNYRD's own Chiropractor (see pic)

Overall was a great bout and both teams came together afterwards to celebrate at Delvecchios with a Caveman DJ and plenty of dancing fun

THIS Saturday! Utica Clubbers vs. Rotten Chesters

This Saturday, June 26th CNYRD's Utica Clubbers will take on Roc City Roller Derby's RottenChesters (Rochester, NY) in "Summer Crush", our big summer kickoff bout. The bout is at JFK Arena, 500 W Embargo St in Rome NY. The doors will open to the public at 6pm, and the bout starts at 7pm.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Tramontane Cafe (Utica), Cafe Domenico (Utica), and Bill's Variety (Rome). Under 10 yrs old and over 65 yrs old is free!

This bout will mark some firsts in CNYRD history. We will have event lighting and camera/projection work from Entertainment Services of Rome NY, and we will be displaying our new headshots from Ramon Aiello of Phodograph.com for the Clubbers on the big projection screen.

The halftime band will be Negative Truth, and the National Anthem will be sung by Barbershop Quartet "Firestorm".

We have DJ Deaf Geoff providing bout music, and Harry Crumb announcing.

So come on out and enjoy the first weekend of summer with CNYRD and tell us who YOUR summer crush is!

Bill DiPaolo is a Rome, NY native and lucky for us is a supporter of things cool and local. He operates Entertainment Services, a full service audio, lighting, and video production company based out of Rome but serving a worldwide customer base. Bill came to a few of this season's bouts and approached us with a keen eye for production. After talking with him, we realized that there was huge potential in gaining his help to take it up a (huge) notch in our AV needs at bouts. CNYRD has always wanted to have our bouts be events and not just a simple sports game. Bill brings this to the table.
Starting with the June 26th bout vs Roc City's Rottenchesters, Entertainment Services will be providing overhead lighting on the track, officials, penalty boxes, etc, and also a large rear projection screen showing live action closeups of the bout in progress, along with information showing each individual skater, ads for sponsors, etc.
Please join us in experiencing the new phase of CNY Roller Derby! We play by WFTDA rules with an emphasis on real athleticism, but that doesn't mean the atmosphere at our bouts cant be as awesome as what you saw on TV in the '80's!

When we saw the pictures Ramon Aiello of Phodograph.com was taking, over a year ago, we couldnt help ourselves but approach him about doing derby headshots for CNYRD. His past work on an individual basis with a few of our skaters and friends were astounding and beautiful. Ramon's work just screamed roller derby to us, and we were right!

Ramon signed on as a league sponsor in late 2009, and has been working tirelessly to entertain our crazy practice/game schedule in order to catch our members for headshots when we're not all gross and sweaty....not an easy task! Ramon was and is very interested in finding each subject's comfort zone and bringing their derby persona to the surface, and we couldn't have asked for better! You can see the new headshots HERE. CNYRD Travels to Ithaca for interleague scrimmage

On Thursday 6/17/2010 members of CNYRD travelled to Cortland, NY to play an interleague scrimmage against the ladies of the Ithaca SufferJets. The SufferJets had their competition roster ready to go, and CNYRD had a mix of vets, 1rst season recruits, and even first time bouters. Not surprisingly, the score reflected this mix of skaters, but everyone did a great job.
Back in April 2008, Ithaca were the hosts of CNYRD's first EVER public bout, skating as the Asylum City Lunatics, and it was great to see some of the same faces and get to catch up on old times with the team. There were lots of new faces, too, and certainly some great talent.
Ithaca were great hosts and we cant wait to do it again and return the favor and have them come to us sometime soon! Perhaps an Ithaca A&B team vs CNYRD A&B team double header next season.......?

Our venue, our ticket locations, our staff, and our website have been deluged with requests for information and confusion over upcoming events in regional roller derby. While we are flattered that when local press covers anything related to roller derby, we are just assumed to be the subject by all of our awesome fans, it's not always true that its about us, so we want to make sure everyone is aware of the facts-

There is a second local roller derby league started in July of 2008 which is called 'The Utica Rollergirls' or 'URG' for short. Their league name is also the name that they compete under as a team name. CNYRD's travel / all-star team is called 'The Utica Clubbers', established in December 2007, and it seems that the two names are so similar that our fans, the other league's fans, and even our own families are getting confused over who's events are who's. It may be further confusing to see many CNYRD/Clubbers/Blue Collar Betties skaters in attendance at URG's home events, but we are simply there as spectators, just like you.

Many information requests have asked about a bout that people think we are holding on either June 5th or 12th. On June 5th, our good friends the Albany All-Stars are in fact having a bout, and you can see the details HERE. This is the only roller derby bout from Albany to Syracuse on June 5th that we are aware of. On June 12th, The Utica Rollergirls are holding a bout in New Hartford. CNYRD does not have an event that day. CNYRD is competing against Rochester's (Roc City's) Rottenchesters on June 26th at JFK Arena in Rome. See details HERE. CNYRD's home season games will ALL be at JFK arena in Rome.

The coolest yearbook photo ever....

We thought this was so awesome we just had to share....
CNYRD's own Chiropractor #911 certainly has a dedicated fan base all her own. At every bout you can see Chiro shirts, signs, and banners. Chiro's family is always leading the charge. You'll spot them by their "911" shirts and crazy cheering as Chiro does 'The Worm' in her intro.
Chiro's nephew Phillip, who graduates from Remsen High School on June 27th, had a very special yearbook photo taken to show how much he loves his Aunt Chiro and his favorite roller derby team.
We couldnt be more excited for Phillip as he racks up scholarships and opportunities and we know he'll do great. We're so proud to be 'his' league!
