New photos coming soon!

CNYRD is very pleased to announce that we are in the process of working with Ramon Aiello of phodograph.com to have individual photos taken on all our league members. Ray's past pics of Farmer's Slaughter, and many other local personalities, are amazing and we could not be more honored that he's agreed to help us out.
Ray takes it to a whole new level and really grasps what each person wants out of their photos- things to accentuate, things to avoid....and he strives to make everyone comfortable and beautiful. With such a diverse group of characters on our league, Ray's approach is the perfect fit to empower us through art. Please check out his website and myspace for examples of work he's done. Hire him to do a project for you, and tell him CNYRD sent you!

MellFire and CNYRD in the paper

Last week our beloved Mellfire was featured in an article in the Observer Dispatch in conjunction with the upcoming Heart Run & Walk about the stroke she survived at age 23, and all the things she does now as a survivor- including ROLLER DERBY!. Check it out! (Photo cred to Marc Goldberg. You're awesome Marc!)

Adult Recreation Examiner article

On Sunday 2/21/2010, Paul Kobos attended CNYRD's practice to get a feel for what roller derby is all about. He wrote a very nice article for the Utica Adult Recreation Examiner, complete with photos by our good friend Marc Goldberg. Check it out HERE

Little Bastard presents to Utica Rotary Club

On Friday 2/19/10, our Chairwoman Little Bastard was invited to speak to the local Rotary Club about roller derby. This was the result of tireless PR work by Virgo Bat-tering Ram through her extensive contact list. Farmer's Slaughter was also in attendance for the talk, and helped with some 'live demonstrations' with the crowd:)
The speech went great and established some wonderful professional connections throughout the area. The Rotary invited us back to speak at other regional chapters, and we hope we can make it twice as fun next time.

Clubbers travel to Harrisburg for first bout of 2010

On 2/14/2010, the Utica Clubbers travelled to Harrisburg, PA to bout against Harrisburg Area Roller Derby (HARD)'s Fallout Femmes. Playing with the Utica Clubbers were Blaze and Stryct of Assault City Roller Derby. The game was intense, and great preparation for our 2010 home season. The Clubbers played a really solid game, but the final score had HARD on top, 181-128. HARD were wonderful hosts, and we look forward to playing them again.
Many of our skaters were excited to go shopping at the DerbySkinz table, too- Auntie Panty rocks!
Unfortunately many of us CNY folks had to hit the road right after the bout to be back in CNY for work Monday morning, so no afterparty for us:( Next time.
Great skating from everyone!

2/7/2010 - Scrimmage with Albany All-Stars

On Feb 7th CNYRD took our regular practice time on the road in what we hope will become a regular occurrence. Albany All-Stars Roller Derby were kind enough to host us for an interleague scrimmage, pitting the Utica Clubbers against Albany's veteran skaters and the Blue Collar Betties against Albany's newer skaters.
It was the Betties first chance to go 100% full contact, since our winter practice space dos not allow a lot of leeway....they did WONDERFUL. I have no idea if anyone kept track of the scores, but everyone skated well, no one got hurt, and we all had a fun time. We even had a visit from Albany's fire department- who were there for an alarm call but stayed to check it out a bit.

Strong Fresh Meat Turnout!

Another class of CNYRD newbies started off strong on 2/2/2010, including a good number of incoming refs. We are so excited to see their progress. You may see some of them playing with the Blue Collar Betties and reffing by the end of this season!
